About MAMA

The Meet A Mum Association (MAMA) was launched in 1979 by Esther Rantzen (President of MAMA) and ‘Woman’ Magazine. MAMA is now a UK registered charity which aims to provide friendship and support to all mothers and mothers-to-be, especially those feeling lonely or isolated after the birth of a baby or moving to a new area.

By attending a local MAMA group, mums become part of a network of women wanting to make new friends and support each other through good times and bad. This helps alleviate the feelings of isolation and loneliness often experienced by new mothers which can sometimes lead to, or be part of, postnatal illness.

If there is not a local group in the area, we will pass on details of mums who have contacted us asking to meet other mums for friendship and support.

The MAMA website was designed and is sponsored by Jackbox Webdesign who support a limited number of charities each year through Internet promotion, marketing and website support.

Mums can become MAMA members by attending and participating in their local groups, or joining the online group.  Membership cost just £5 per year, and entitles the member to vote on resolutions regarding the running of MAMA at the general meetings, discounted rates at MAMA events and conferences, access to the online group forums (which is not available to the general public) and a copy of our quarterly newsletter "Mum's The Word".

We also have an Associate Membership scheme which is open to all health professionals and non group members who would like to support our work and cast their own vote at general meetings.

The Patrons of MAMA are:

Professor Ian Brockington;
Denise Welch
Dr Hilary Jones

Dr Miriam Stoppard.
